2025 Subaru Forester vs. Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester are two of the best-selling SUVs in the country right now, with both offering great value to consumers looking for a spacious two-row SUV that provides an expansive cargo hold. In truth, theyā€™re both great SUVs. If youā€™re deciding between them, itā€™s a tough choice. Weā€™re a Subaru dealership, so weā€™ll try to keep the home team bias to a minimum, but we often have Honda CR-Vs on our used lot, so weā€™re well acquainted with both models. Weā€™ll compare and contrast some of the most important things to know about each model, including their powertrains, cargo space, and pricing. If youā€™d like to take the 2025 Forester for a test drive, visit our Subaru dealership in OKC. If you decide the CR-v is more your speed, shop used models with Bob Moore Subaru.

2025 Subaru Forester vs. Honda CR-V Powertrains

Both the Forester and the CR-V have a single engine, offering similar output. Weā€™ve broken both down in the graphic below:Ā

Model: Engine: Horsepower: Torque (lb-ft): Towing Capacity (lbs): Fuel Economy City/Highway (MPG)
2025 Subaru Forester 2.5L flat-four cylinder 180 178 3,000 26/33
2025 Honda CR-V Turbo 1.5-liter four-cylinder 190 179 1,500 28/34

The Honda CR-V edges out the Forester in most areas, thanks to the turbocharger. The Forester starts to differentiate itself with the towing capacity, giving you a measure of extra towing ability for smaller loads. It also comes standard with AWD, while the CR-V comes standard with FWD. While they offer pretty similar performance, the Forester is a bit more outdoorsy, while the CR-V is a bit more efficient. If the outdoor ability is more important, weā€™d go with the Forester. If you prioritize effciency, the CR-V should be the choice. While on the subject of fuel efficiency, keep an eye out for the new Forester Hybrid, set to debut in 2025. It should eclipse both gas models we have listed here.

Subaru Forester vs. Honda CR-V Pricing

For this section, weā€™ve compared the MSRPs we found from each automaker. We included the entry-level pricing and the highest-level options so you can get a gauge of where your options will fall.

Model: Lowest Listed MSRP: Highest Listed MSRP:
2025 Subaru Forester $29,695 $39,995
2025 Honda CR-V $30,100 $41,100

Both models are very competitively priced on both ends, with MSRPs never falling to far away from $1,000 from each other. While the Forester is slightly more affordable, the CR-V probably makes up that difference with the more fuel-efficient powertrain. What the CR-V doesnā€™t have is the Foresterā€™s natural off-road ability. The Forester has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, raised roof rails, weather-resistant seats and plenty of other features that help it stand apart from the crowd.

Forester vs. CR-V Cargo Space

Both models feature two spacious rows of seating, allowing for passengers in the rear to spread out reasonably comfortably. The CR-V is more spacious, as shown in the chart below:

Model: Trunk Cargo Space (cubic feet): Room Behind 1st Row (cubic feet):
2025 Subaru Forester 29.6 74.4
2025 Honda CR-V 39.3 76.5

Both models offer a similar amount of space when the rear row is folded, but the CR-V offers the better experience behind the rear row, with nearly 10 extra cubic feet of space. The CR-V is a clear winner in this segment for folks who plan to take advantage of the extra cargo space. Both models also offer plenty of cubbies and additional storage compartments throughout the cabin to ensure passengers have plenty of room.

We find folks prefer the CR-V when sticking to the city and prefer the Forester when they plan to take their SUV camping or other adventures. The CR-V has a larger trunk and better efficiency but canā€™t match the Forester’s off-road performance. Which one makes the most sense for you? It depends what you value in a car!
