Used Subaru Forester for Sale in OKC | Bob Moore Subaru

Since its initial release in 1997, the Subaru Forester has remained an icon of the Subaru lineup, quickly becoming a favorite thanks to its boxier silhouette and spacious cabin. Subaru makes a lot of compact SUVs, including the Crosstrek and Outback, but the Forester has always prioritized maximizing passenger and cargo space throughout the cabin, making it one of the most spacious SUVs in Subaru’s arsenal. The Forester has undergone numerous changes over the last decade, encompassing three generations, various trim levels, and a range of new features. We’ll break down the spec differences across the generations in the section below before highlighting each year of the Subaru, starting with 2018. If you’re interested in finding a used Subaru SUV, visit Bob Moore Subaru in OKC today.

Comparing Subaru Forester Generations

The Subaru Forester has seen three generations over the past decade:

  • Fourth Generation (2014-2018)
  • Fifth Generation (2019-2024)
  • Sixth Generation (2025-present)

We’ve broken down the engine specs from generation to generation in the chart below:

Generation:  Engine: Horsepower: Fuel Economy (city/highway)
4th Gen 2.5-liter horizontal four-cylinder 170 26/32
4th Gen 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder 250 23/27
5th Gen 2.5-liter horizontal flat-four cylinder 182 26/33
6th Gen 2.5-liter horizontal flat-four cylinder 180 26/33
6th Gen Hybrid 2.5-liter horizontal flat-four cylinder 194 35/34

If you’re looking for a turbocharged Forester, you’ll need to reach back to the fourth generation, as aside from that powertrain, the rest of the Forester lineup features variations of the same four-cylinder engine. Since the end of the 4th generation, all models have come with a continuously variable automatic transmission, but the Forester has always come with AWD, regardless of the model’s year.

2018 subaru forester

2018 Subaru Forester

The final year of the fourth generation marked the end of the optional six-speed manual transmission in the Subie SUV, with most models from this point getting a CVT instead. While the cabin is somewhat dated, the older cabin really holds up in our eyes, with the only obvious signs of age being the screens, which are a bit smaller than we’d expect from a modern Subaru. That said, the older Forester still gets plenty of cargo volume, with about 75 cubic feet in total.

2019 subaru forester

2019 Subaru Forester

As 2019 ushered in a new generation for the Forester, it dropped the turbocharged engine and the manual transmission in favor of a standardized approach. It added more cargo space and numerous additional features compared to the 2018 Forester, with trim levels ranging from the Base Forester to the Subaru Forester Touring and Limited. Despite the redesign, the Forester earned another five-star safety rating this year, continuing a long stretch of design excellence.

2020 subaru forester

2020 Subaru Forester

In 2020, the Forester didn’t see as many dramatic changes, but Subaru continued to build on a winning formula, adding extra driver assistance features like standard adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, a tire pressure monitor and other safety measures. Top end models started to get some extra luxury features, including heated seats, exterior mirror and an all-weather package to protect against the elements.

2021 subaru forester

2021 Subaru Forester

The biggest surprise for 2021 was the reintroduction of a manual transmission, this time a seven-speed manual mode for the CVT transmission. that only came on Limited models. LED headlamps are standard across the board starting in 2021. Most models also saw the inclusion of a center-console storage unit. Aside from these changes, the Forester settled down a bit after a few years of big changes.

2022 subaru forester

2022 Subaru Forester

The Forester doesn’t sit still for very long, evidenced by the refreshed look the Subaru SUV received in 2022. New headlamps, wheels and an updated grille headlined the changes for 2022, but our favorite new addition was the inclusion of the Wilderness trim level. The Subaru Forester Wilderness is a trim level that has been available since 2022, offering additional off-road features, increased ground clearance, and various cosmetic enhancements.

2023 subaru forester

2023 Subaru Forester

2023 marks the first of two model years that saw absolutely no changes from the previous model year. The Forester was firing on all cylinders and didn’t require any further enhancements at this time. If you’re deciding between a 2022, 2023, or 2024 model, know that everything from the trim levels to the features remains the same across the board.

2024 subaru forester

2024 Subaru Forester

The final entry of the fifth-generation Subaru Forester saw no significant updates, continuing the same trim levels established in 2022. The Base model continued to offer a budget-conscious option, while the Limited and Touring models came with additional luxury amenities. Of course, the Forester Wilderness continued offering an off-road-focused approach.

2025 subaru forester

2025 Subaru Forester

After three years with no updates, the Forester entered its sixth generation, marked with a new design, updated chassis, and a powertrain that received some tweaks here and there. 2025 marked the introduction of the Forster Hybrid, offering excellent fuel economy for an SUV of its size, the Forester. With this new generation, the Forester focused on delivering practical features with a comfortable ride quality.
